BUT FIRST AT SIX UW PLATTEVILLE PICKS UP THE PIECES
AFTER THE JUNE TORNADO.
AN UPDATE ON THE PROGRESS.
IT WAS A MONUMENTAL CHORE - TO UNDO THE MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS OF DAMAGE AN E-F-2 TORNADO DID TO THE PLATTEVILLE
CAMPUS - 57 DAYS AGO.
-- MICHELLE --
IN TWO DAYS STUDENTS WILL BEGIN RETURNING FOR THE
AND AS NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER TELLS US - GIVING
THEM A CAMPUS *TO EVEN RETURN TO* WAS NOT EASY.
from the very beginning this was a race against the
when an ef-2 tornado tore through the uw platteville
campus on june 16 it did millions of dollars in damage.
it set in motion the challenge - the 59 day challenge
to put this campus back together again in time for
the august 15th arrival of students.
57 days ago when the tornado hit we really didn't
know what we were looking at.
TODAY IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU WILL SEE THE REMINDERS.
there are holes punched in sides of the walls here.
BUT THERE ARE ALSO SIGNS OF ALL THE WORK THAT'S BEEN
CREWS ARE MOVING FURNITURE BACK INTO RESIDENCE HALLS
IN ADVANCE OF THE RETURN OF STUDENTS.
IN A MATTER OF DAYS THOSE STUDENTS WILL MOVE INTO
A BUILDING A TORNADO TRIED TO DESTROY.
we had 3 residence halls that were significantly impacted.
we had our engineerying hall had walls that were blown
inside that had curves that, even when they stripped
them down to the studs, the metal studs, were curved
because of the strength of the wind.
ALL THAT REMAINS NOW IS TO REPLACE WINDOWS BLOWN OUT
BY THE TORNADO.
THAT WILL BE DONE BEFORE CLASSES RESUME ON SEPTEMBER
we knew this was going to be a long haul to try and
get this fixed and we knew it was going to take a
lot of work and that is what this summer been at uw
platteville is a lot of work.
perhaps the last big hurdle in uw platteville's recovery
lies here at the football stadium.
repairs are not scheduled to be completed here in
time for the the opening of school.
they are however scheduled to be completed by september
10th...3 days in advance of the football team's home
in platteville, this is dave delozier, wisc news 3.
THERE IS NO EXACT DOLLAR FIGURE YET IN TERMS OF THE
DAMAGE DONE TO THE UNIVERSITY.
THEY'VE BEEN SO FOCUSED ON TRYING TO MEET DEADLINES
- NO ONE HAS AN EXACT FIGURE ON THE NUMBER OF WINDOWS
IT WAS A LOT -- ALL SHOULD BE REPLACED IN TIME FOR
THE START OF CLASSES.
