Some Wisconsin Retirees Condemn Budget Bill

Alliance For Retired Americans March To Capitol

Members of the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans hand-delivered a resolution to the governor's office on Monday expressing concern about the controversial collective bargaining bill and forthcoming budget.

The state's chapter of the national group wrote up a statement and marched it to the state Capitol together. The resolution condemns Gov. Scott Walker's bill and proposed budget, saying it unfairly targets programs like SeniorCare, which many retirees depend on for health insurance.

Leon Burzynski, the group's president, said SeniorCare is one of the most important programs because it helps people save money on prescription costs.

"The governor claims that we're going to save $15 million to do that,” Burzynski said. “To us, that's a $15 million tax on seniors. They're going to say the same thing about BadgerCare. They're going to save $16 million. To us, that's a tax on the poorest of the poor. It's a shame they're trying to balance a budget on the people that are the most needy in the state of Wisconsin."

Burzynski said these cuts will most dramatically affect future generations of retirees.

"Our kids and our grandkids are not going to have the quality of life that we have,” Burzynski said. “They're going to work until the day they die. And they're going to hope that they have a few weeks or months that they can spend on retirement because basically, the programs that make our quality of life possible are going away."

Instead, members said that they want Walker to stop giving tax breaks to the wealthy and restore state funds for programs that benefit middle- and lower-income groups.
