MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin officials have told students to expect classes on Thursday even though teacher assistants are calling for a "teach out" on campus.Provost Paul M. DeLuca Jr. sent a note to students and faculty Wednesday about the need to keep the campus open."We value public debate and participation in the political process, however, we do not believe that this should come at the cost of a day of instruction for our student body," DeLuca said in the letter. "We are advising students to attend class, and faculty and staff to teach in the way they normally would."However, Alex Hanna, the co-chair of the Teacher Assistants Association is encouraging a "teach out" Thursday. Hanna said he also doesn't want the schools to cancel classes. However, he thinks TA's should consider moving classes to send a message about the budget repair bill moving through the legislature."We are not calling for the canceling of classes since we value the role of the UW as an institution of learning," Hanna said." Instead, we are calling for holding classes off campus, or rescheduling them."But DeLuca said it is the responsibility of instructors to ensure that students’ educational opportunities are preserved.
