NEXT AT SIX.
IN A ONE NIGHT THE BUSINESS WAS GONE AND MANY THOUGHT
THERE JOBS WERE GONE WITH IT.

SIX MONTHS AGO A FIRE DESTROYED THE PLATTEVILLE CULVERS
40 EMPLOYEES - MANY OF WHOM HAD WORKED THERE FOR YEARS
- FACED THE IMMEDIATE UNCERTAINTY OF NOT HAVING A

BUT THIS STORY TOOK SOME UNEXPECTED TURNS AND NEWS
3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER IS HERE TO EXPLAIN..
ERIC AND MICHELLE - THE CULVERS IN PLATTEVILLE WILL
CHALLENGE ANY PRECONCEIVED NOTION YOU MIGHT HAVE OF
WHAT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT SHOULD BE.
NOT ONLY IS THE FOOD MADE TO ORDER - BUT THE CARE
AND CONCERN FOR THE 40 EMPLOYEES IS MADE TO ORDER
hi, how can i help you?
IF YOU WANT A MEASURE OF THIS CULVERS RESTAURANT -
JUST LOOK AROUND.
great, they get hoppin.
they get hoppin real good.
ORDERS THAT COME FAST.
number 85 to go!
AND THEN ON TO THE NEXT.
help whose next?
ALL THE WHILE KEEPING QUALITY IN MIND
we scooped it with love for you.
we're quick serve as opposed to fast food.
BRUCE KROLL HAS OWNED THIS CULVERS FOR 19 YEARS.
LAST NOVEMBER 16TH HE LEARNED HOW FAST EVERYTHING
NAT OF FIRE it is always worse than what you expect
it to be when you get here and it was total devastation.
THE RESTAURANT DESTOYED - AND THE 40 EMPLOYEES - WELL
what the owner could have done is he could have said
hey you can find another place of employment.
INSTEAD BRUCE KROLL DECIDED TO KEEP PAYING THE 40
EMPLOYEES FOR SIX MONTHS- A TOTAL OF 144 THOUSAND
DOLLARS - OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET.
to me not only was it the right thing to do, to me
it made business sense to do it.
BRUCE KROLL DID ASK ONE THING OF HIS EMPLOYEES - THAT
THEY VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO THE COMMUNITY.
COLE COOPER DECIDED TO TRY TO HELP THE ONES WHO TRIED
TO SAVE THIS PLACE.
we actually set up a fund raiser in honor of the local
platteville fire department.
we raised over 2 grand and 100 percent of the donations
were actually given to the fire department.
NOW SIX MONTHS FROM THE DAY OF THE FIRE THE RESTAURANT
IS AGAIN OPEN.
being busy, moving fast.
BUT IF YOU WANT THE TRUE MEASURE OF THIS PLACE LOOK
PAST THE QUICK SERVICE TO THE EMPLOYEES AND A MAN
WHO IS IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL.
it is just a building and culvers platteville is much
more than that.
it is the people and not the building and we didn't
lose the people so why should we allow the fire to
cause that to happen.
NOW AS IF BRUCE KROLL AND HIS EMPLOYEES HAVEN'T BEEN
THROUGH ENOUGH CONSIDER THIS.
THEY REOPENED THEIR DOORS ON JUNE 16TH AND THAT NIGHT
A TORNADO CAME WITHIN 20 YARDS OF THEIR DOOR.
IT DIDN'T DO ANY DAMAGE TO THE RESTAURANT - BUT THEY
A LOT OF DEBRIS TO CLEAN UP AND WERE CLOSED FOR ONE
ERIC AND MICHELLE - BRUCE OF COURSE TOOK IT IN STRIDE
AND SAID SIMPLY - WHAT ARE THE ODDS.
