JENNIFER HOFF/REPORTING says, Merle Forbes owned his
own cab company in Platteville for 30 years.
His son says, one of Merle's customers targeted the
79-year-old who had been missing since Thursday.
MERLE RAN HIS LONGTIME BUSINESS OUT OF DOWNTOWN PLATTEVILLE
HIS SON, DOUG, SAYS A CUSTOMER WANTED TO BE PICKED
UP THURSDAY AT 5P.
TWO HOURS LATER, WHEN MERLE'S FAMILY HADN'T HEARD
FROM HIM, THEY CALLED THE COPS.
BY 1A, LACROSSE POLICE WERE INVESTIGATING A BAD CRASH.
THE DRIVER HAD LED THEM ON A CHASE.
THEY SAID TIMMY JOHNSON WAS DRIVING A STOLEN CAR
- THAT DOUG DESCRIBED AS HIS FATHER'S CAB.
POLICE FOUND A BODY IN THE TRUNK, BUT HAVEN'T CONFIRMED
WHO IT IS, ONLY THAT THE VICTIM HAD BEEN ASSAULTED
BEFORE THE CRASH.
MICHAEL MCHUGH/HOLMEN POLICE CHIEF says, Right now,
we're still sorting that out - where the people were
in the car and the details about why the car was stolen

MERLE'S FAMILY SAID JOHNSON ATTACKED HIM BECAUSE MERLE
TURNED JOHNSON INTO POLICE LAST YEAR FO RNOT PAYING
HIS CAB FARE.
COURT RECORDS PROVE JOHNSON WAS CONVICTED OF DEFRAUDING
A TAX DRIVER IN 2013.
MERLE'S FAMILY SAID JOHNSON WAS RECENTLY RELEASED
JENNIFER says, Johnson is in custody and may have
been hurt in the crash.
Lacrosse Police are not answering our questions, but
