I had only one choice.
which is to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples
until I'm told by a judge not to.
-- MICHELLE --
IS FIRST TONIGHT AT SIX.
MORE THAN HALF OF THE STATE'S 72 COUNTIES.
ARE GIVING MARRIAGE LICENSES.
TO SAME SEX COUPLES.
I'M MICHELLE LI.
-- ERIC --
AND I'M ERIC FRANKE.
ARE RUSHING TO COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICES.
BEFORE AN EXPECTED COURT ORDER.
BRINGS THEM TO A HALT.
THE FEDERAL JUDGE WHO FRIDAY RULED THE STATE'S GAY
MARRIAGE BAN UNCONSITUTIONAL.
TODAY -- LEFT THINGS STATUS QUO.
NEITHER MEETING THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S REQUEST TO
STOP THE MARRIAGES.
NOR DID SHE TELL COUNTY CLERKS.
TO KEEP ISSUING THOSE LICENSES.
nats of some marriage celebration over the weekend,
or today etc
SINCE FRIDAY'S RULING BY JUDGE BARBARA CRABB.
HUNDREDS OF GAY COUPLES IN WISCONSIN.
HAVE TIED THE KNOT.
SCOTT MCDONNELL @122518 we had a line this mornig,
we'll continue to issue marriage licenses here in
Dane County, my count as of this morning is that there
are 17 other counties issuing licenses 122529
AND BY LATER IN THE DAY.
THAT NUMBER WAS WELL OVER HALF OF WISCONSIN'S 72 COUNTIES.
MONDAY JUDGE CRABB DECLINED TO PUT A HALT TO THE MARRIAGES
AT THE REQUEST OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL.
BUT SHE ALSO DIDN'T TELL COUNTY CLERKS.
TO GO FORWARD.
There are obviously county clerks who either disagree
or are willing to turn a blind eye to that legal reality,
and it's really important that someone other than
me, a court with jurisdiction over this case issue
a similar legal opinion
PRECEDENT INDICATES A STAY EVENTUALLY MAY COME --
WHILE THE LEGAL WRANGLING CONTINUES.
THERE IS SOME UNCERTAINTY FOR COUPLES WHO HAVE BEEN
MARRIED SINCE FRIDAY.
A RISK, SOME.
ARE WILLING TO TAKE.
CRABB'S DENIAL OF AN EMERGENCY STAY.
IN HER WORDS.
CAME BECAUSE CLERKS WERE NOT ISSUING LICENSES.
BECAUSE OF ANYTHING SHE ORDERED.
VAN HOLLEN ALSO APPEALED TODAY TO THE U-S 7TH DISTRICT
COURT TO STOP THE MARRIAGES WHILE HE APPEALS FRIDAY'S
THAT COURT COULD RULE, AT ANY TIME.
