IT'S MADE UP OF LAW ENFORCEMENT REPRESENTATIVES, DISTRICT
ATTORNEYS, PUBLIC HEALTH AND INSURANCE GROUPS.
BUT THE MEMBERS WHO QUIT SAY.
THE D-O-T VALUED THEIR NAMES AND ORGANIZATIONS.
NOT THEIR PARTICIPATION TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.
IN WISCONSIN LAST YEAR.
185 PEOPLE DIED IN ALCOHOL-RELATED CRASHES, DOWN 38
FATALITIES FROM THE YEAR BEFORE, ACCORDING TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.
IT CREATED A TASK FORCE TO FURTHER COMBAT IMPAIRED
BUT THURSDAY, FOUR MEMBERS RESIGNED.
RICHARD BROWN/UW SCHOOL OF MEDICINE says, It's so
clear that there are certain measures we could be
taking that would be effective, so I'm very disappointed
the state is not moving in that direction and hope
that this calls attention to that fact..:26

WISCONSIN'S ALCOHOL POLICY PROJECT COORDINATOR JULIA
SHERMAN, AND TWO OTHERS HAD BEEN CONTEMPLATING THEIR
RESIGNATIONS SINCE THE TASK FORCE'S LAST MEETING,
A MONTH AGO.
JULIA SHERMAN, WI ALCOHOL POLICY PROJECT says, We
have to change the alcohol culture and yet this task
force has systematically rejected, or the reports
issued by the task force that were never put to a
vote, don't have any of the evidence-based policies
we know will prevent and reduce underage drinking
and alcohol misuse..:34
FEEDBACK REQUESTS ARE INSINCERE, MEETING INFORMATION
AND BAR OWNERS HAVE TOO MUCH INFLUENCE.
THE TAVERAN LEAGUE IS A MEMBER, BUT ITS SPOKESPERSON
SAYS HE HASN'T ATTENDED A MEETING IN 10 MONTHS.
SAYS THE GROUP HAS MET FOUR TIMES.
SINCE IT STARTED.
AND WISHES THE STATE SHOWED MORE INTEREST IN THEIR
PLANS TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
DOZENS OF COMMUNITIES HAVE ALREADY ADOPTED POLICIES
PROVEN BY RESEARCH.
RICHARD says, I hope this calls attention to the fact
this committee is not achieving its purpose and perhaps
prompt some more examination into whether our DOT
is really taking, the appropriate steps, steps that
have worked in other communities..:28

IT PLANS TO MEET WITH THE MEMBERS WHO RESIGNED TO
DISCUSS THEIR CONCERNS.
AND DEFENDED THE TASK FORCE, SAYING THERE ARE MANY
EFFECTIVE MEASURES IN PLACE STATEWIDE HELPING TO REDUCE
ALCOHOL-RELATED CRASHES, FATALITIES AND INJURIES.
