and -- A LOCAL FAMILY.
AND THEIR SON'S FORMER HIGH SCHOOL...
AT ODDS OVER ALLEGATIONS OF RACIAL HARRASSMENT AND
WHO DID WHAT TO STOP IT.
WAS IT ENOUGH?
ONLY NEWS THREE HAS THE STORY.
AND IT'S FIRST TONIGHT AT SIX.
A LOCAL FAMILY IS FIGHTING WITH EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
OVER ALLEGEDLY FAILING TO STOP RACIAL HARASSMENT.
IS ASKING FOR TUITION MONEY BACK...
SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY.
THEY HANDLED THINGS APPROPRIATELY.
NEWS THREE'S JESSICA ARP HAS BEEN INVESTIGATING THIS
ONE YOU'LL ONLY SEE ON NEWS THREE.
EDGEWOOD'S SCHOOL YEAR IS WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK...
BUT IT ENDED FOR ONE STUDENT IN DECEMBER...
WHO LEFT AFTER HARASSMENT.
FOLLOWED HIM FOR MONTHS.
they tried so hard to make it seem like it was just
me and that it wasnt a bigger problem
BLAKE BROADNAX SPENT TWO AND A HALF YEARS AS A STUDENT
AT EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL...
PLAYED ON THE BASKEBALL TEAM AND WAS ACTIVE IN SCHOOL
BUT HE SAYS THAT THROUGHOUT THAT TIME, HE WAS THE
VICTIM OF RACIALLY MOTIVATED HARASSMENT, WHICH ESCALATED
INTO HIS JUNIOR YEAR.
BLAKE AND HIS MOTHER RENA TOLD THEIR STORY TO NEWS
THREE FROM THEIR NEW HOME IN INDIANA.
i think the worst situation for me was out of everything
that had happened was in public speaking i had asked
a kid to edit my speech and he gave it back to me
and he crossed out my name blake broadnax and wrote
my little niglet :49 and then wrote the n-word on
the paper about 10 more times
DOCUMENTS PROVIDED BY EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL TO THE
BROADNAX FAMILY ATTORNEY DETAIL THE INCIDENT IN MARCH
OF LAST YEAR.
THE STUDENT WAS PULLED FROM CLASSES.
GIVEN AN OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION, REQUIRED TO APOLOGIZE,
AND PUT ON DISCIPLINARY PROBATION.
BUT BROADNAX SAYS THIS WAS NOT THE only incident.
BLAKE CLAIMS HE'D BEEN HEARING THE N-WORD EVERY DAY
i expected racial things to happen so much that i
would be like relieved when it did happen becasue
then i could go on with my day :57
DOCUMENTS SHOW THE SCHOOL OFFERED TO CONFRONT AND
DISCIPLINE THE STUDENTS.
ON THIS AND OTHER ALLEGED INCIDENTS.
INSTEAD, THE FAMILY ARGUED FOR A LARGER APPROACH TO
ADDRESS THE CULTURE AMONGST THE WHOLE SCHOOL.
EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL'S PRESIDENT.
SAYS HE DOESN'T BELIEVE THE N-WORD WAS BEING USED
IN THE SCHOOL'S HALLS DAILY...
AND FEELS HIS ADMINISTRATION HANDLED INCIDENTS THAT
WERE REPORTED TO THEM APPROPRIATELY.
A MONTH AFTER BLAKE'S FAMILY DECIDED TO PULL HIM OUT
OF THE SCHOOL....
EDGEWOOD HELD AN ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY AND SENT THIS
LETTER HOME TO PARENTS:
"INCLUDING THE SOCIAL MEDIA MISUSE, THE USE OF RACIAL
SLURS, INTENTIONAL SOCIAL EXCLUSION, CYBER BULLYING,
AND PROFANE LANGUAGE...
AND THEY WERE MAKING EFFORT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
its good that they did it after i left, but its like,
that should have happened while i was still there
:03 and that was most of the reason i decided to leave
this hurts, i dont like any student to leave
we tried our best to save the student and keep them
here :48 and unforunately the family didnt agree and
we feel bad about that ;55 but that doesnt mean we
did something wrong :59
WHILE THE BROADNAX FAMILY IS ASKING FOR CHANGES TO
EDGEWOOD'S CULTURAL DIVERSITY EDUCATION PROGRAM...
THEY ALSO WANT A FULL REFUND OF THEIR TUITION PAID
OVER TWO AND A HALF YEARS...
AND COMPENSATION FOR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS.
WHILE THEY HAVEN'T ASKED FOR A SPECIFIC AMOUNT...
THEIR ATTORNEY NOTES A JURY AWARDED A STUDENT IN NEW
YORK ONE POINT TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN A FEDERAL LAWSUIT
AGAINST A PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR SIMILAR ALLEGATIONS.
-- ERIC --
DOES THE SCHOOL SAY THEY INTEND TO OFFER SOMETHING
TO THE FAMILY?
THEY WOULDN'T COMMENT ON SPECIFICS OF THE CASE...
OTHER THAN TO SAY THEY BELIEVE THEY DID NOTHING WRONG...
THE FAMILY SAYS THEY ARE STILL CONSIDERING A FORMAL
