IN PARTS OF MADISON - TWO INCHES OF RAN FELL IN TWO
HOURS LAST NIGHT.
STREETS FLOODED AS STORM SEWERS COULDN'T HANDLE ALL
WHEN THAT HAPPENS IT CAUSES PROBLEMS THAT LAST LONG
AFTER THE FLOODING ENDS.
NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER JOINS US - DAVE THOSE
PROBLEMS ARE SHOWING UP OUT THERE TODAY..
ERIC - WHEN ALL THAT WATER RUNS OFF INTO THE STORM
SEWERS - IT CARRIES WITH IT A LOT OF OTHER THINGS.
THINGS THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING IN OUR LAKES -
AND THAT'S WHERE IT EVENTUALLY ENDS UP.
this chain of lakes is the treasure of our community.
AND ON A DAY LIKE TODAY THEY REMIND US WHY WE LIVE
it is a draw for tourism, it is a draw for business
and it really just improves the quality of life for
everyone who lives here.
it is what makes madison special.
BUT ON A NIGHT LIKE TUESDAY....
when those rains hit we knew that that was something
beyond the normal storm.
IN A TWO HOUR SPAN, ONE TO TWO INCHES OF RAIN FELL.-
TOO MUCH FOR THE STORM SEWERS TO HANDLE.
AND THAT'S WHERE THE PROBLEMS BEGIN.
BECAUSE WHAT WAS ON THE STREET - SIDEWALKS AND PARKING
LOTS - IS NOW HERE.
everything that lands on those streets gets carried
straight to the lakes.
there's no stop between here and there.
there's no filtration system.
EVERYTHING FROM TRASH AND DEBRIS TO OILS AND WASTE
ENDS UP HERE.
IN AN URBAN SETTING LIKE THIS - WITH SO MUCH PAVEMENT
- RAINS RUNOFF RATHER THAN SOAK IN.
basically any surface that makes it hard for water
to soak through, that's a problem for the lake because
instead of having a place where the water can soak
in, down into the ground water where it can be filtered
before it connects into the lakes, anything that's
running off the surface is carrying every polutant
with it as it travels to the lakes.
CLEAN LAKES ALLIANCE ADVOCATES SAY IT IS UP TO RESIDENTS
TO KEEP POLUTANTS OUT OF AREAS WHERE THEY CAN BE WASHED
INTO STORM SEWERS.
i think the key is that as municipalities and as residents
of communities we need to start being more proactive
and innovative in the way we think about storm water
THE WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT THERE WILL ELIMINATE
A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF PAVEMENT AND RECONFIGURE STORM
THAT PROJECT IS BEING PRAISED BY THE D-N-R FOR THE
BENEFITS IT SHOULD HAVE ON WATER QUALITY.
