VETERANS WILL BE IN OUR HEARTS.
AND TOP OF MIND, AS THEIR SACRIFICE.
AND SERVICE ARE HONORED THIS MEMORIAL DAY.
-- MICHELLE --
THE IMPORTANCE OF REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS IS THE
FOCUS OF A PROJECT IN MONTELLO.
AS ONLY NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER TELLS US - A
MEMORIAL IS BEING BUILT TO HONOR VETERANS - BY VETERANS.
it is pretty small town.
ON THE WAY FROM HERE TO THERE.
couple of major highways come together, 22 and 23,
so it gets some traffic down through here.
THERE ARE THINGS YOU ALMOST CAN'T MISS.
i think montello has a waterfall taht everyone talks
BUT THERE ARE ALSO THINGS - WE PASS BY - AND NEVER
they never knew it was there.
they never ever knew that it existed because they
couldn't get to it.
it wasn't accessable.
ALONE ON A HILLSIDE - WATCHED OVER BY HUNDRED YEAR
OLD TREES - WHERE IT SEEMINGLY ALWAYS HAS BEEN.
it is some time ago.
SOMETHING SO NATURAL TO THIS PLACE - MONTELLO GRANITE
PUT THERE TO REMEMBER.
it was put there by war mothers in appreciation for
their children who served in the military and who
sacrificed in the military.
BY ITS VERY DEFINITION THIS
IS MEANT TO PRESERVE REMEMBRANCE.
BUT BY ITS LOCATION - IT IS OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF
we never really had a memorial for the veterans in
WHICH GOT DAVE BENSON, RICH HASSE AND SKIP KLEMP -
THREE VETERANS TO THINKING.
basically it just started with us talking about it,
of what we could go ahead and do.
A VISION - TO TAKE THIS PIECE OF HISTORY AND CREATE
A FITTING MEMORIAL - BUT THAT WOULD TAKE MONEY.
skip was the first donor.
SKIP KLEMP KNEW WHAT IT MEANS TO SERVE.
he was a very, very proud marine.
A VETERAN OF THE JUNGLES OF CAMBODIA - HE KNEW - AND
THIS WOULD BE ABOUT HONORING THAT SERVICE AND SACRIFICE.
skip was the one who started all of the fund raising
and donations for this project and really without
skip this thing would have never gotten off the ground.
THE THREE MEN WORKED TOGETHER - RAISED ENOUGH MONEY
- GOT ALL THE APPROVALS - AND FOUR YEARS LATER THEIR
VISION IS BECOMING A REALITY --- IF NOT --- SKIPS
he really liked it.
he thought it was going to be so neat.
he couldn't wait for them to start to break ground
and we knew this spring that they were going to break
nats of work being done.
SKIP KLEMP WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THIS DAY HAPPEN.
oh it was very...it was everything to him.
BUT HE PASSED AWAY BEFORE GETTING THE CHANCE TO SEE
it was a really heartfelt loss for all of us.
FOR TOO LONG A MEMORIAL ON A HILLSIDE - WAS LOST TO
IN A FEW SHORT MONTHS - WE WILL NO LONGER DRIVE BY
AND NOT SEE.
this is a big day for all the veterans in marquette
county, a real big day.
A MEMORIAL TO ENSURE SERVICE AND SACRIFICE IS FORGOTTEN
skip would say the same thing.
he'd say semper fi.
IN MONTELLO, THIS IS DAVE DELOZIER, WISC, NEWS 3.
-- MICHELLE --
A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY IS PLANNED FOR LATER THIS
SUMMER WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT.
TO COMPLETE FUNDING FOR THE MEMORIAL - BRICKS ARE
BEING SOLD THAT WILL LINE THE WALL BEHIND THE MEMORIAL.
-- ERIC --
THOSE BRICKS CAN BE ENGRAVED WITH THE NAMES OF VETERANS
WHO SERVED HONORABLY.

STORY ON CHANNEL 3000 DOT COM OR ON OUR MOBILE APP.
