Student, Teacher Injured In Jefferson High School Pool Mishap

Underwater Window Broke During Class

Updated: 11:10 am CST November 30, 2010

A 17-year-old student and gym teacher were hurt during a mishap in a physical education class in the Jefferson High School's pool on Monday afternoon, according school officials.

The incident occurred when an underwater viewing window shattered with students in the pool, causing water to flush into the adjoining room. The student couldn't get out of the pool in time and the gushing water sucked him through the window's fractured glass into the pool's mechanical room.

"Mr. Fetherston, our instructor, jumped in the water to go to the aid of the student. He, too, was pulled through the window," said school Superintendent Michael Swartz.

The teacher, Greg Fetherston, suffered minor cuts and bruises and was released from the hospital, Swartz said.

"He was in good spirits. He was concerned, as we all are, for our student," Swartz said.

The male student was transported by Med Flight helicopter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison hospital with unknown injuries. The student remained hospitalized Monday night.

The pool was closed to all public access Monday after the incident. The water will be drained as school officials work to figure out why the glass shattered.

The pool was built in 1967. A new pool is scheduled to open at the school next year, WISC-TV reported.
