U-W CARBONE CANCER CENTER
EMILY KUMLIEN IS ON THE HEALTH WATCH TONIGHT.
THE STUDY SAYS AFRICAN AMERICANS IN DANE COUNTY WERE
30 PERCENT MORE LIKEY THAN WHITES TO BE DIAGNOSED
AND 56 PERCENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE MORE LIKELY
TO DIE FROM CANCER THAN WHITES
THOSE ARE A LOT OF NUMBERS TO THROW AT YOU.
BUT FOR ERIN BAILEY WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY.
THIS CAUSE IS PERSONAL..
SOTmy mother was diagnosed in 2003 with breast cancer
and that is how i started down this path
ERIN BAILEY WAS BORN AND RAISED IN MADISON.
HER MOTHER PASSED AWAY FROM BREAST CANCER IN 2008
2 SOT7and this has just really fueled my fire
BAILEY IS AN OUTREACH AND EDUCATION ASSOCIATE WORKING
ON THIS STUDY
3 SOT you heard these numbers all the time on the
national level and it just really inspired me to really
THE STUDY LOOKED AT DATA FROM AFRICAN AMERICANS AND
WHITES MEN AND WOMEN.
18 AND OLDER FROM 2001 TO 2010.
SHE SAYS WHERE YOU LIVE, WORK AND PLAY- ALL ARE FACTORS
4 SOT madison and dane co are very behind state wide
and also nation wide with other social determinates
so where we live isn't exactly the greatest place
for african americans
5 SOT7: prostate and corectial stood out a lot
THE STUDY SAYS AFRICAN AMERICANs WERE 76 PERCENT MORE
LIKEY TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH COLRECTAL CANCER, THAN
AND FOR MEN, 79 PERCENT MORE LIKELY TO DIE OF PROSTATE
FOR WOMEN- AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN WERE 43 PERCENT
MORE LIKEY TO DIE OF BREAST CANCER.
6 SOT we know women are getting diagnosed less often
than their white counter parts but they are dying
more often from that disease
BAILEY SAID THEY ARE PUTTING THE DATA OUT THERE AND
THEY WILL LET THE COMMUNITY DECIDE WHAT THE DISCUSSION
SHOULD BE, BUT SHE HOPES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE
7SOT-every day you have a chance to make a difference
and if i have made the difference in one person's
life each and every day I go to work then I feel like
I make a difference in the world
BAILEY SAYS SHE HOPES THIS PROFILE WILL NOT ONLY START
THE DISCUSSSION BUT BE USED TO SUPPORT CANCER PREVENTION,
SCREENING AND RESEARCH PROJECTS TO REDUCE THIS DISPARITY.
