MAYOR: well, this is an integral part of Fitchburg
1 VO/MINI-DISCW1 55
33 ACRES THAT FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS HAS BEEN A CITY
OWNED GOLF COURSE.
A 9 HOLE COURSE - THE ONLY COURSE FITCHBURG HAS.
1 SOTW2 54
GOLFER: there is no other golf course in the area.
odanna is a number of miles away and it is usually
crowded and again you have to make a tee time.
you don't always have to have a tee time to come over
2 VO/MINI-DISCW3 55
EASE OF ACCESS COULD BE BOTH A BLESSING AND A CURSE.
FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS, THE CITY OF FITCHBURG HAS
HAD TO SUBSIDIZE THE OPERATION OF THE COURSE WITH
20 THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR.
2 SOTW4 53
MAYOR: and when the city started doing that 3 years
ago council members and me as mayor had questions
to say what is the best use of this.
is it a golf course, but since we're putting in public
assistance, tax payers have the right to know what
else should be up there.
3 VO/MINI-DISCW5 55
THAT'S THE QUESTION - SHOULD THIS REMAIN AS A GOLF
COURSE OR IS THE CITY BETTER SERVED IF THIS WERE TO
BECOME A PARK?
3 SOTW6 52
MAYOR: and now we have a survey out throughout the
community, more than 250 people have already responded
asking them that question.
it is just so peaceful and quiet.
4 VO/MINI-DISCW8 53
JODI JOHNSTON HAS LIVED ON THE COURSE FOR 33 YEARS
WITH A VIEW OF THE EIGHTH GREEN.
SHE WANTS TO KEEP THAT VIEW AND FEARS PROBLEMS AND
CRIME WOULD FIND THEIR WAY INTO A PARK.
4 SOTW9 54
i'm not guessing on this one i know exactly what's
going to happen and it won't be pleasant and i'm leaving.
after 33 years i won't be staying here.
A DIFFICULT DECISION FOR A CITY TRYING TO DETERMINE
BEST USE OF THESE 33 ACRES.
the challenge is how it serves the community et all,
all 25,000 of us.
you have a 36 square mile township, fitchburg is and
how does it best serve the immediate residents.
