NEXT AT SIX.
THEY'VE REACHED THE BREAKING POINT CLASSES ARE SO
OVERCROWDED - THE WISCONSIN DELLS SCHOOL DISTRICT
IS ASKING VOTERS FOR HELP.
-- ERIC --
30 MILLION DOLLARS IN HELP TO BE EXACT.
VOTERS WILL DECIDE NEXT TUESDAY.
NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER SPENT THE DAY IN THE
DELLS AND JOINS US.
DAVE - THE 30 MILLION DOLLARS WOULD INCLUDE A NEW
AND ALSO REMODEL THE CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL - WHICH IS
60 YEARS OLD AND TURN IT INTO A MIDDLE SCHOOL.
WITH MORE STUDENTS THAN CLASSROOM SPACE - TEACHERS
HAVE BEEN MAKING THE BEST OF A DIFFICULT SITUATION.
everyday it is a challenge.
BUILT 60 YEARS AGO FOR A CAPACITY OF 550 STUDENTS
- TODAY THEY EXCEED THAT NUMBER BY 60.
it is a domino effect that impacts all facets of our
education here at wisconsin dells.
BECAUSE JUST ACROSS THE PARKING LOT SITS SPRING HILL
SCHOOL WHICH IS BOTH THE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL
WHERE THERE ARE MORE STUDENTS THAN THERE IS SPACE
we've had students be educated in hallways.
we've had students that have been educated in closets
at times or storage rooms at times.
we've utilized modular classrooms and we now have
an eighth grade class that shifts between a high school
building and a middle school building to receive their
NACHRIENER - THE MUSIC TEACHER KNOWS ALL ABOUT THAT.
LAST YEAR THEY WERE SO OVERCROWDED THAT THERE WAS
NO MUSIC ROOM.
SO SHE TAUGHT THIS CLASS UNDER THE STAIRWELL IN A
HALLWAY USING A WHITEBOARD ON WHEELS.
here it is a rolling platform and so she would store
it out here with the toilet paper and then when she
had class she would roll it out into the classroom,
into the hallway.
TO RELIEVE THE OVERCROWDING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS
ASKING VOTERS TO PASS A 30 MILLION DOLLAR REFERENDUM.
WITH IT THEY WOULD BUILD A NEW HIGH SCHOOL - REMODEL
THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS BUILT 60 YEARS AGO AND
TURN SPRING HILL INTO AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
we've got a great plan that sets the table for success
for the next 40 or 50 or 60 years anf for the net
effect of $16 per 100,000 after the governors property
i think it is the right thing to do for kids.
WHILE THERE IS NO ORGANIZED OPPOSITION TO THE REFERENDUM
- ITS PASSAGE IS ANYTHING BUT A GIVEN.
POLLING SHOWS VOTERS DIVIDED ON THE ISSUE.
IF IT DOES NOT PASS - THE DISTRICT WILL LIKELY COME
BACK TO VOTERS AGAIN THIS FALL BECAUSE THEY SAY THE
PROBLEM IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY ON ITS OWN.
