Kromrey Mold Problem Meeting Set For Wednesday

MIDDLETON, Wis. -- A meeting for Kromrey Middle School parents will be held this week to discuss the school's mold problem.The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Middleton High School Performing Arts Center.Kromrey Middle School will remain closed this week as cleanup efforts continue after mold was found inside the building.School officials said they plan to reopen the school on Sept. 10.Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Superintendent Don Johnson said that concerns about the mold's potential harmful effects prompted them to close the school last Tuesday. He said the mold isn't toxic, but is an allergen and can cause problems for students or staff with respiratory issues.The mold cleanup at Kromrey Middle School has been estimated at about $20,000, WISC-TV reported.Meanwhile, Oriole Lane Elementary School in Mequon closed Tuesday after school officials found mold under some benches, in the hallways and in at least one classroom.Classes there had been underway for three school days until school officials found the mold. Superintendent Demond Means said he isn't taking any chances opening up until it's safe."(The school will be closed) until we find no evidence of mold. We hope it's just one day, but it may take a few days," Means said.About 30 other schools across the state have had to cancel classes because of mold.
