MADISON, Wis. -- An accused drunken driver slammed into a Dane County squad car on Tuesday morning while the deputy was conducting a routine traffic stop of another vehicle.Officer Trent Schafer said he was making a normal stop to check a driver's registration at 2:25 a.m. on Highway 14, just west of the Beltline, when a driver hit his squad car."I was about ready to open my door, and as I did, I felt a big thud hit my car. I saw lights go flying by and I saw a car continue on and crash in front of another vehicle that I had stopped. And my first instinct was to get out and make sure that nobody else was injured," Schafer said.No one was seriously hurt although Schafer said he injured his neck slightly.
He said Stephanie Hallio, the 20-year-old driver, had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit and was also charged with possessing cocaine at the scene. He said she wasn't very cooperative when officers first approached her."(Hallio)was actually trying to spin out her tires to leave, but her front tire was actually facing the wrong way, so she couldn't go anywhere," Schafer said. "She asked why I had my brake lights on. She didn't know she'd hit anybody."The crash was an experience the officer said he won't ever forget."I've made quite a few traffic stops in the short time I've been out, and I've had cars come close to hitting me and then I've actually pulled them over and dealt with them appropriately, but never like this," he said. The crash seriously damaged the squad car as well. Hallio doesn't have insurance, authorities said.Schafer said he was feeling well enough to go to work the following day.
