WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. -- No charges have been filed, but police said they are investigating whether someone at the Island Resort in the Wisconsin Dells has been stealing electricity.Wisconsin Dells Police Chief Bret Anderson said the hotel is closed because it doesn't have electricity, partly because the city shut off its power and it's under investigation on suspicion of stealing electricity from the city of Wisconsin Dells."It's not a common crime. Our investigation is on going," Anderson said. "If you've got the knowledge, in this particular business, (a thief) could actually pull the meter and the electricity continues to flow."The municipal electric utility pulled power to the hotel, but the suspected theft isn't the only reason. The resort is undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, and the city attorney said it was not paying its power bill, WISC-TV reported.Anderson said police suspect the electric theft has been shorting the city since October, and he said the thief was crafty in trying to avoid detection.
"We would have noticed that there was no monthly electric bills, but because they were pulling the meter off and putting it back in throughout the day, it was difficult for us to detect," Anderson said. "Because of the substantial amount it would be a felony. So we're actively pursuing the person who did it."According to its bankruptcy filing, the resort owes the city more than a $100,000 in back utilities. Documents said the resort also owes tens of thousands of dollars in room taxes and owes the IRS some $72,000 in payroll taxes.Neither the resort owner not his attorney returned WISC-TV's calls Thursday. The resort was expected to be in court Thursday morning to have a hearing with a bankruptcy judge to see if it could get temporary relief and get its electricity turned back on, but for some reason it canceled that hearing, WISC-TV reported.
