Wis. Soldier Among 5 Killed In Afghanistan

Soldier From Conover Killed Monday

A 36-year-old soldier who lived in northern Wisconsin is one of five Fort Carson soldiers killed Monday when their unit was attacked with an improvised bomb in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Staff Sgt. Matthew J. West, of Conover, Wis., died in the attack. He served with a unit based at Fort Carson, Colo.

The other soldiers killed were identified Wednesday as Capt. Dale A. Goetz of White, S.D., Staff Sgt. Jesse Infante of Cypress, Texas, Staff Sgt. Kevin J. Kessler of Canton, Ohio, and Pfc. Chad D. Clements of Huntington, Ind.

West was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group. The others were part of the 4th Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team, which arrived in Afghanistan this summer.

All were killed Monday.
