Officer Injured In Arrest

Updated: 3:22 pm CDT September 1, 2010

DeForest police said a man was arrested on a felony charge of sixth offense operating while intoxicated after fleeing a traffic stop and leading officers on a chase Wednesday night.

The DeForest Police Department said an officer saw a vehicle traveling 60 mpg in a 25 mph zone at about 11:38 p.m. on South Street. Police said the officer initiated a traffic stop and determined that the driver had been drinking.

Police said officers were also informed that the driver, Scott J. Kiefer, 48, had earlier offered marijuana in lieu of cash for an order of food at a local fast food restaurant.

Police said that as the officer waited for backup to conduct field sobriety tests, Kiefer fled from the stop in his vehicle, leading officers on a seven-mile chase into the town of Vienna. Authorities said speeds in the chase reached over 80 mph on County Highway V. They said Kiefer eventually ran through a stop sign at the intersection of County Highway V and State Highway 113, went into the ditch and struck several power pole guide wires.

Police said Kiefer then attempted to flee on foot into a cornfield but was apprehended by two DeForest police officers.

One officer tripped on a wire hidden in the grass and severely sprained his left elbow in the fall. He was transported to a local hospital and was later released.

DeForest police said Kiefer was arrested on charges of felony OWI sixth offense, felony fleeing an officer, violation of probation as well as numerous other traffic charges. Kiefer was transported to a local hospital for a blood-alcohol test with results pending, police said.

Kiefer was later booked into the Dane County Jail, police said.

Police said Kiefer was arrested in 2002 on two counts of fleeing an officer and fifth offense OWI. He spent six years in prison on those charges and was released in March 2008. Authorities said Kiefer is currently on extended supervision through the Department of Corrections for those charges.
