SPRING VALLEY TOWNSHIP, Wis. -- An 8-year-old Brodhead boy has died following an off-road utility vehicle crash on Saturday night in a Rock County farm field. The Rock County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of a rollover utility vehicle crash at about 8 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Holden Road in Spring Valley Township.Emergency responders found an 8-year-old boy unresponsive, not breathing, bleeding from the ears, and somewhat cold to the touch, sheriff's officials said. The Rock County Sheriff's Office said the investigation showed the boy had been driving a John Deere Gator XUV southeast on a field access lane when he lost control and failed to negotiate a curve. The Gator rolled down a 6-foot berm, where the boy was found ejected and pinned underneath.A hired farmhand came across the crash and called the boy's father, who was working in a nearby field. The two men were able to free the boy and subsequently began performing CPR on him, authorities said.Once at the scene, law enforcement officers continued CPR and set up an automatic external defibrillator. Paramedics transported the boy to Mercy Hospital in Janesville by ambulance.Sheriff's officials said the boy suffered blunt force trauma to the head and chest as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m.Authorities said the boy was familiar with the Gator, as he had operated it several times in the past. The boy was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, sheriff's officials said. The incident remained under investigation by the Rock County Sheriff's Office and the Rock County Coroner's Office, and the boy's identity was being withheld pending notification of family members.Authorities noted that no foul play was suspected and they did not anticipate the filing of any criminal charges."It's not uncommon for kids of that age to be operating that equipment on farms, especially when there's fields and things to be done out there," said Sgt. Ken Marquardt with the Rock County Sheriff’s Department. "He was probably just helping his dad with transportation of some stuff, and it's just a tragic, tragic incident."
