SAUK CITY, Wis. -- The body of a man who disappeared after jumping into the Wisconsin River on Monday night has been found.Robert Kleist, 39, jumped off the Highway 60 bridge into the river with two friends just after 7:30 p.m. on Monday; however, Kleist never resurfaced after entering the water, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.Columbia and Sauk county authorities conducted a search for Kleist using boats and divers in the hours after he disappeared.Fire officials said that the Kleist's body was found between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Thursday. The body was found by a state Department of Natural Resources warden in Sauk County, about 1.5 miles down river from where he jumped.Officials said an autopsy was performed Thursday morning and while the results haven't been released, the Columbia County sheriff is confirming the body found is Kleist's.Officials said they are now focusing on their investigation.Friends said Kleist was the third person to jump from the Highway 60 bridge in Prairie du Sac Monday night, but there are numerous rumors circulating of foul play.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Department said each rumor has to be considered until it can be proven false."Right now, what we are doing is we are sifting through all the information that we got, whether it's from people that we talked to or possibly CrimeStopper calls or any other types of tips. We're weeding through that to see if there's anything other than just a terrible accident," said Columbia County Sheriff Dennis Richards.Friends of Kleist previously told WISC-TV they were out drinking Monday and wanted to go to the bridge and jump like "old times."One friend said she and Kleist's girlfriend begged him not to jump, holding on to his arm and shorts.Richards said that if anything in the investigation seems questionable, the report will be forwarded to the district attorney's office. He did note, however, that it is an open investigation at this point and not a homicide investigation.
