Boat Crash Injures 2 On Lake Waubesa

Authorities Arrest Man Who Was Operating Boat

Updated: 3:22 pm CDT August 22, 2010

Two people were injured, one severely, in a boating crash on Lake Waubesa Saturday, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said that sheriff's deputies and emergency responders from McFarland and Oregon were called to the 4200 block of Morris Park Road in the town of Dunn at about 6:30 p.m. on a report of a boat crash.

Sheriff's officials said that Travis J. Klein, 21, of McFarland, had been operating an 18-foot Pro Craft Family Fisher 180 with five passengers.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said the preliminary investigation indicates that Klein made an abrupt turning maneuver that caused two passengers sitting on the bow of the boat to be thrown overboard, and they were subsequently struck by the boat's propeller.

Dustin L. Wallace, 21, of McFarland, was transported to the University of Wisconsin Hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff's officials said.

Another passenger, Kyle A. Muetzelburg, 21, of Wauwatosa, was also taken to UW Hospital with hand injuries.

Authorities said the three other passengers were uninjured.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said that Klein was arrested on a charge of causing great bodily harm by intoxicated use of a boat and was booked in the Dane County Jail.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said it is continuing to investigate the incident.
