MADISON'S WATER UTILITY CAN'T SAY WHETHER THE EFFORTS
TO THAW A WATER PIPE...
MAY HAVE FRIED ELECTRICAL WIRES IN A NEIGHBORING HOME.

THE INCIDENT ON MADISON'S WEST SIDE ABOUT TEN DAYS
NEWS THREE'S JESSICA ARP SPOKE TO THE HOMEOWNER.
AND THE WATER UTILITY.
NATS TAKING OFF FUSE BOX
i've never personally seen this happen to a ground
ELECTRICIAN JOE GEHIN HAS SPENT PLENTY OF TIME IN
MATT SALLY'S HOUSE LATELY...
AFTER SALLY AND HIS FAMILY CAME HOME TO A SCARY SCENE.
when we came home and came in thru the garage the
whole house was full of this smoke haze kind of thing
and we had a smell almost like burnt plastic in the
AFTER CALLS TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, MADISON GAS AND
ELECTRIC, AND THEN GEHIN.
THEY REALIZED THAT THEY WERE DEALING WITH A PROBLEM
POSSIBLY NOT FROM HEAT.
whatever procedures they take to melt the frozen pipes
:10 whether its an arc welder or what it was or soem
sort of stray current or current through here that
was too much for this wire to handle :19 and for some
reason it came into this residence and melted away
THE MADISON WATER UTILITY CONFIRMS THEY WERE THAWING
A PIPE ACROSS THE STREET FROM SALLY'S HOME THAT NIGHT...
AT THIS POINT THE UTILITY CAN'T SAY IT DID.
OR DIDN'T CAUSE THE PROBLEMS.
i think its not out of the realm of possibility, thats
why we're taking it very seriously :17 and our risk
management team with the city is looking hard into
this :24 we are running an electric current thru a
metal pipe to heat it up to thaw it :33
OF 365 PIPES THEY'VE THAWED THIS YEAR.
FAR GREATER THAN THE 5 THEY TYPICALLY DO
THIS IS THE FIRST REPORTED PROBLEM.
BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS OF A CONCERN FOR
we're furtunate that our home didnt burn down and
that there was no more damage than there was :57 but
we do want to make sure eveyrone is safe and that
procuedres are done safely and properly and people
are aware that it is happening :05
SALLY SAID HE HOPED THE CITY COULD START NOTIFYING
NEIGHBORS IF THERE WAS GOING TO BE THAWING WORK DONE
HE SAYS HE WOULD HAVE STAYED HOME IF HE KNEW THIS
WAS A POSSIBILITY.
THE WATER UTILITY SAYS THEY CAN'T WAIT UNTIL ALL NEIGBORS
ARE NOTIFIED BECAUSE THEY NEED TO WORK QUICKLY TO
GET WATER WORKING AGAIN TO PEOPLE'S HOMES.
SALLY HAS FILED A REQUEST WITH THE CITY TO PAY FOR
HIS ELECTRICAL COSTS.
