Riders Leave, Milwaukee Cleans Up

Some Riders Disappointed By Party's Headline Act

Posted: 3:50 pm CDT September 1, 2003

Cleanup began early Monday morning after the "party of the century" wrapped up Harley's 100th Anniversary celebration.

When the dust settled, the city woke to a Harley hangover.

"I'll never forget it for the rest of my life. This was the party of the century, for sure," said James Wright of Thompson, Manitoba.

Wright and his buddies will ride 1,300 miles home. The Harley experience is one he'll never forget.

"My heart goes out to everybody in Milwaukee that treated us like gold," Wright said.

Wisconsin and the motorcycles are parting ways.

"You gonna miss them?" 12 News asked a Harley fan.

"Oh yeah, you get a lump in your throat when you hear the roar of the thunder," one spectator said.

More than 100,000 people packed the lakefront Sunday night for the celebration's final hoorah, but Monday morning there was a gigantic mess.

"Yeah that's what I thought. 'Man, I've got to clean this all up," Cassie Wozny said.

There were beer bottles and cigarette butts, whiskey and water.

"Some left over food, lot of cardboard, a lot of bottles. Nothing cool yet, no ground scores," Harrison Schultz said.

But there was plenty on the ground left over from a party 100 years in the making.

And should there be a 105th.

"Maybe I'll be down here having fun, not cleaning it up," Wozny said.

"It was well worth the trip, and I'd like to come back in about five years," Leon Gillis of Thompson, Manitoba said.

Three huge stars took to the stage to entertain the thousands of Harley fans who had packed into Milwaukee.

Elton JohnTim McGraw, Kid rock and Elton John (pictured, left) all took turns entertaining the crowds, but many people at the concert had mixed emotions when it came to the headliners.

For weeks, Harley kept it a big secret about who would perform. Only a handful of Harley employees knew.

Some were soured by the selection.

A number of people actually walked out during the show, opting to take a hike instead of sticking around for the music and the fireworks that followed.

WISN 12 News caught up with a number of people and regardless of how they feel, many said the concert did not affect their overall experience at Harley's 100th.

"Good time until tonight (Sunday night) when the main act came out. It just was not appropriate for tonight (Sunday night)," a rider said.

"We thought there was somebody else after him (Elton John)," a fan said.

But most said the experience overall was a great one.

"No, this is just today. We've been here all week. This has been great, and I can't wait for the 105th cause we'll be back. It's excellent," a rider said.

"We've had a fantastic time. We've uh, shipped our bikes over from England so we've had our own bikes here. The people of Milwaukee and America have been fantastic to us. It's just been the greatest time ever," another rider said.

The parting shot from the huge weekend here in Milwaukee was fireworks along Milwaukee's lakefront lit up the sky and brought the festivities to a close.
