The most recent incident happened Wednesday night in the Town of Dunkirk, just south of Stoughton. One man is dead and six officers have been placed on administrative leave, while the investigation unfolds. At least one of the officers involved in Wednesday night's shooting had just returned from leave because of last week's fatal shooting in McFarland. It's taking a toll on officers and on neighbors, who are still in a sense of shock over the shooting, WISC-TV reported.Christine Bagley, who lives about a half a mile from Wednesday's shooting scene, said she was almost in a sense of disbelief when she heard the shots and then saw of dozens of emergency vehicles taking over her neighborhood."We live out in the country for a reason -- not to have this happen it us," Bagley said. The incident started Wednesday night on Aaker Road, in the Town of Dunkirk.Officers were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. by a woman who said her husband was intoxicated, and she wanted him removed from the property.
Sheriff's officials said that once at the scene, deputies quickly came across the man, who emerged from his garage with a shotgun.Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said he refused orders to drop the gun, and that's when deputies fired a less-lethal bean bag at the man."It did not cause him to drop the shotgun, from what we're told," Mahoney said. "They continued to verbalize, at which point the individual fired at the deputies, who returned fire to protect themselves."The man, who has yet to be identified, died at the scene. It marks the third critical incident that Dane County deputies have responded to in the past two weeks -- and the second fatal shooting involving deputies in a week.Mahoney said it's unusual and it's taking a toll on his officers."Domestic incidents, law enforcement officers know, are very often some of the most dangerous calls for service that they respond to," Mahoney said. "And I think last night and last week are evidence to the threats law enforcement (officers) are under every day."Bagley said it's frightening that this happened so close to home."It's pretty scary when you're just a cornfield away and you heard so many gun shots go off and you don't know which direction they're going," she said.Police said their investigation will continue, likely until Friday. Once it's complete, everything will be turned over to the Dane County district attorney, who will determine if the officers' actions were justified.Deputies were cleared of any wrongdoing earlier this week for the deadly standoff in McFarland.More information, including the identity of the gunman, is expected to be released Friday.Meanwhile, Dane County authorities are searching for anyone who saw the incident unfold, especially a man who was seen bicycling near the incident on Aaker Road between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. They're asking the man, or any other witnesses, to contact them via the tip line at 608-284-6900.
