The incident began after authorities received a report about an intoxicated man with a shotgun in the 2800 block of Aaker Road just after 7:30 p.m. Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said the man's wife told authorities he was drunk and she wanted him out of the house. The couple had a history of domestic abuse, according to Mahoney.Sheriff's officials said that the man came out of the garage armed with a shotgun. Deputies said that he refused to put down the weapon. Those nearby said that they saw the incident unfold."They yelled, 'Put the gun down; step away from the gun.' And my husband said, 'We're going the other direction.' When we turned around, we heard, 'Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,' and it was like nine shots were fired off and we left," said Cinnamon Mennes, who witnessed the shooting.Deputies fired a non-lethal bean bag at the man, but he didn't drop his gun. Instead, he apparently shot at deputies, who then returned fire, according to authoritiesWhen the man fell to the ground, deputies immediately came to his aid, they said. A MedFlight helicopter was called, but the man died at the scene.
"I'd like to point out this is the second incident, critical incident in the past week in which individuals have opened fire on deputy sheriffs responding to calls for services. And the second time, deadly force had to be utilized to save the lives of our deputy sheriffs," said Mahoney.Deputies were cleared of any wrongdoing earlier this week for a deadly standoff in McFarland earlier this month.A full investigation into Wednesday night's shooting will begin Thursday morning, Mahoney said. More information is expected to be released at a press conference on Friday.Dane County authorities said on Thursday that detectives would like to speak with a man who was seen bicycling near the incident on Aaker Road between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. They're asking the man, or any other witnesses, to contact them via the tip line at 608-284-6900.Authorities said that six sheriff's deputies apparently involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in conjunction with department policies. The Dane County Coroner's Office has an autopsy scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday. Afterward, the identity of the man the cause of death will be provided, authorities said.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
