Mayor Blasts Newspaper Article Over Central Library

Dave Cieslewicz Calls Article 'Mere Speculation'

Updated: 7:08 am CDT July 19, 2010

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz lit up the Wisconsin State Journal over an article that was published Saturday regarding plans to update the downtown library.

The paper printed an article concerning the renovation of the Central Library, stating that the new library might not include a façade or a third floor.

In his blog, Cieslewicz said there is no new information to back up the paper's claims, WISC-TV reported.

"Not one single thing has changed since the Common Council and I pivoted to building a new library on the current site a few months ago. There was no new information that justified the State Journal's breathless headline or lead paragraph," Cieslewicz wrote.

The mayor and the Common Council met in May and decided to renovate the current library.

Cieslewicz wrote in his blog that he will hold public meetings concerning the design of the library over the next few months. He said library users, taxpayers and downtown neighbors will have a chance to weigh in on the designs.

"If the community decides that it wants to trade off one amenity for another that it considers more important then that's the direction we will take," wrote Cieslewicz.
