LOGANVILLE, Wis. -- The state Department of Agriculture returned to the Sauk County farm that it had ordered last week to stop selling dairy products without a license.Loganville farmer Vernon Hershberger said he's just trying to make a living by offering raw dairy products at his private, members-only farm store. But the Department of Agriculture has now ordered him to cease operations, serving Hershberger with papers on Tuesday, almost a week after inspectors first visited his farm."When (authorities) entered with a warrant and inspected the facilities, they said it was clean; everything was good to go. (They said), 'Get the raw dairy out; we're ready to write up a license,'" said Hershberger.Local filmmaker Max Kane captured the second visit to Hershberger's farm on film. He's documenting the raw milk battle in Wisconsin, but the Department of Agriculture said despite the fact Hershberger is selling raw dairy products, this is a licensing issue, not a raw dairy issue. But Hershberger said he doesn't buy that. He said the department told him it was about raw dairy, WISC-TV reported. Hershberger said he felt like he and his family are being harassed by state employees."Raw milk is the core of our business," he said. "I feel I have plenty of people -- support of a lot of people." Hershberger said he will continue to keep his store open, raw dairy products and all. He maintains he is operating within the law because his store is private and open to members only. The Department of Agriculture has no real controlling authority because it is not regulating the farm and the store, WISC-TV reported. The next step would be for a prosecutor to get involved for possible charges.
