Meteorite Hunters Could Be Targets For Scammers

Some Meteor Pieces Could Be Valuable

Updated: 1:21 pm CDT April 29, 2010

Nearly two weeks after a meteorite was spotted over southwestern Wisconsin, the search for potentially valuable fragments continues. But concern is growing over possible scams associated with pieces of the meteor.

Some meteorite fragments can be worth quite a bit of money, but some are concerned about out-of-towners who are looking to make a quick buck scamming inexperienced meteorite hunters.

Experts said there are hundreds, if not thousands, of meteor fragments spread across the area, but many of the rocks are being buried now by plows.

But experts said people lucky enough to find one should beware of any scammers.

Karl Aston, a meteor hunter from Missouri, said it's inevitable that whenever something valuable is involved, people will try to defraud others, such as by offering a very low amount for a very valuable piece of rock.

"We don't do that, but there are people out there that probably will. I don't really know of any instances in this fall, but there are people like that, as in any business," Aston said.

Wisconsin meteorites are already popping up on eBay for hundreds of dollars. One is close to $1,300 already, WISC-TV reported.

Aston said people will pay that amount but people who find meteorite pieces should be cautious when selling.

He said that because there are still so many pieces still out there, the price per gram is still really unknown.

"That's still being determined -- there hasn't been much of this hit the market yet. A lot of it's just going into private collections," Aston said. Experts said the price of meteorites is really based on supply and demand. The more there are for a particular event, the less they're worth.

Law enforcement said people should deal with reputable sources only, and if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
