The search for suspects spreads across state lines in the Verona triple homicide investigation.

Police say the FBI is a part of the investigation.

Meantime, a makeshift memorial is taking shape at the scene of Thursday's murders.

Well-wishers have left flowers on the doorstep of the Verona home, where three young men were killed.

Victims Identified

Police identified Saturday three young men gunned down in Verona.

The victims are Jason C. McGuigan, 28; Daniel R. Swanson, 25; and Dustin J. Wilson, 17.

Verona Police Chief Bernard Coughlin says an autopsy showed all three died from gunshot wounds that were apparently inflicted while they were sleeping.

While the FBI has been asked to help in the case, Coughlin wouldn't say how many times the men had been shot, where or with what type of weapon.

Authorities also released photos of two SUVs McGuigan owned -- a black 1997 Ford Explorer and a white 2003 Cadillac Escalade.

They want information about who was last seen driving them and where.

Motive May Have Centered On Gambling Debts

Meanwhile, investigators are beginning to formulate a motive in the triple homicide.

The mother of McGuigan's child said gambling debts may have played a role in their deaths, but Coughlin declined comment on that.

Earlier, the father of one of three young men gunned down told News 3 he was afraid something like this could happen because his son was over his head into gambling.

It's something detectives are looking into, News 3 reported.

More than anything else, the father told News 3 he just wants those responsible for killing his son caught.

The victim lived in the bottom of an older two flat, but drove a Cadillac SUV that recently had a top-of-the-line stereo and other bells and whistles added, bringing its value to well over $60,000.

Family and friends say the 28-year-old was heavily into gambling. His dad told News 3 he tried to get his son help, but his son was addicted, and had "major problem."

A friend of the young man told News 3 he does not think he was into drugs.

However, detectives believe he was targeted for some reason. Gambling may be a piece of the puzzle, and it's possible the other two victims were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"A lot of people are very frustrated," neighbor Gary Behr told News 3 Friday. "This is five killings in several months. This is just not Verona. I hope this is an isolated incident."

The father of the victim said his son had been borrowing money from family and friends to support his gambling habit. Again, it's unclear what role, if any, betting played in these unfortunate deaths.

Police: Community Not In Danger

Detectives are trying to figure out if one person was a target and the other two got in the way, or if all three victims were targets, News 3 reported.

At a Friday news conference, Verona Police Chief Bernard Couglin and Dane County Sheriff Gary Hamblin tried to reassure the public that they are in no real danger at this point.

"Certainly there is someone dangerous when you have three deaths," Hamblin said. "But based on the investigative efforts of 45 people since yesterday afternoon, we don't think this poses a threat to the general community."

Police told News 3 that only one of the victims rented the apartment, but that person had guests frequently.

Autopsies were done Friday.

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, talking to people who knew the victims, or to possible witnesses.

Woman Sees Body Lying In Pool Blood

A relative of one of the victims reportedly saw one of the bodies lying in a pool of blood at 305 S. Main St. shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, and then frantically ran down the street and asked people to call 911.

"She didn't say why," said Linda Butts, who called 911 for the woman. "She just said she needed an ambulance and she was going back to the residence."

Even though the woman allegedly said that someone had been shot, police did not go in the house because the area was not safe -- there may have been a suspect with a rifle, News 3 reported.

The SWAT team went in around 6 p.m. The crime scene was described as bloody and gruesome.

Police told News 3 they were worried about securing the area because it is a high-traffic street -- near Miller's store. The streets surrounding the area were blocked off for about three hours.

When the SWAT team went in, they did not find a gunman, News 3 reported.

"The response team entered the residence, cleared it, made a determination there were three victims," said Bernard Coughlin, Verona police chief.

News 3 sources say investigators are treating it as a triple homicide.

They've made preliminary, but not positive, IDs. The IDs will not be released until the victims' families have been notified.

It appears all the victims are under 30. It looks like all knew each other and likely all are from Verona, News 3 reports.

Details are still being sorted out. No suspect is in custody.

"There is not a large concern for safety at this time," Couglin said. "Carry on as you usually do and give us time to sort out this case."

Verona residents have many questions.

"I'm absolutely stunned," said Michelle Ninneman-Rapacz. "This is such a safe community. At least, that's the way I envision it."

Twenty-five year resident David Burris told News 3 he hopes this is just an isolated incident.

"You think you know everybody and then you get something like this and it surprises everybody," he said. "Three months ago we had a murder-suicide -- the first one in 100 years. And now we've got this? It's not something you see in a small city. "
