Bond Set For Teen Charged In Overdose Death

Teen Accused Of Providing Drugs To Victim

A 14-year-old Edgerton-area girl charged as an adult in the overdose death of another teen appeared in Rock County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon.

Ashlee Brown is facing one count of first-degree reckless homicide. Her bond was set at $100,000.

Police said Brown stole prescription painkillers from a relative and gave them to her 13-year-old boyfriend and his friend, Alex Aiken, 13.

On Feb. 9, Aiken's mother found him unresponsive in their Town of Milton home when she tried to wake him for school.

Both Aiken and the other boy overdosed on the painkillers, but the other boy survived.

Aiken died from the overdose, according to the coroner's reports.

Thursday's hearing only lasted a few minutes. For its duration, Brown sat motionless, hiding her face while appearing via videoconference.

The criminal report, released following the hearing, alleges that Brown gave Aiken and the other boy OxyContin and Oxycodone, and that Aiken took at least three 80 milligram OxyContin tablets.

According to the report, the concentration of medicine in Aiken's blood was nearly 20 times higher than therapeutic range.

After the hearing, District Attorney David O'Leary said such actions will not be tolerated.

"We want the message to be loud and clear. We're not going to take these matters lightly. Anybody who thinks it's a good idea to deal drugs to children in our community are going to be facing serious consequences and they will wind up in custody, in court, and facing these matters," said O'Leary.

O'Leary said his office and the defense are discussing options and possible plea agreements.

One possible option, if agreed upon, could put Brown back in the juvenile court system. Under the Serious Juvenile Offender Program, Brown could face a sentence of five years supervision, including three years in custody.

If the case stays in adult court, punishment could be far more severe.

Brown is scheduled to be back in court on March 18.
