Madison Man Dies After Overnight Shooting

Madison Police Investigate, Continue Search For Gunman

A 27-year-old man is dead after a shooting early Monday morning on the city's south side.

Officers were called to the 1100 block of Moorland Road just after 2:30 a.m. on Monday for a report of shots being fired. The shooting happened at Nob Hill Apartments.

Officers said that they found the victim -- Loffton V. Sprouls -- with a gunshot wound.

The Madison man was pronounced dead at a local hospital after 4 a.m.

The coroner's office said late Monday afternoon that an autopsy confirmed Lofton died of a gunshot wound.

Madison police said that this isn't a random crime -- Sprouls was shot outside his own apartment building, likely by someone he knew. Police do not believe the crime is linked to any other homicide or shooting.

Residents of the apartment complex have recently reported increased drug activity to police, but were surprised to learn about the deadly shooting.

"I was used to kids running around and playing and riding bikes, so I definitely didn't expect this, it's definitely concerning," said J.J. Patterson. "I wish it wasn't here -- definitely thinking of relocating."

"It's a pretty nice building, not too many problems at all, everybody just stays to themselves," said another apartment resident who wanted to remain anonymous. "This was kind of a shock to me since I've been here. I've never witnessed anything like this."

Investigators are interviewing those who knew the victim, as well as those living in the apartment complex.

"Other individuals that police would contact later did talk about some type of commotion being heard," said Howard Payne, a spokesman for the Madison Police Department. "So where we are from there I'm not sure and that's what the detectives are working on at this particular moment."

Payne confirmed that police are checking into all possible leads including the concerns about drug activity.

"That question was posed earlier as to would that be a motive in this scenario, and that's definitely a credible motive," said Payne.

Authorities said that an investigation is ongoing and they are talking to a number of people, although there isn't yet a suspect. They are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 608-266-6014.

This is the city's first homicide in 2010, WISC-TV reported.
