Funds Still Available To Help Those Affected By 2008 Floods

Deadline For Program Set For September

It's been almost two years since floodwaters ravaged much of southern Wisconsin.

Despite the passage of time and the efforts to rebuild buildings and lives, victims affected by the 2008 floods are still coming forward and looking for assistance. Meanwhile, there are still emergency funds being distributed.

The relief funds were released in October 2009 as part of the federal economic stimulus package. About $6 million was made available for homeowners who need help starting over.

Dale Schulze was one of those deeply affected by the flooding of June 2008.

"I had a big mess. Actually, it was two floods in one summer," he said.

He said it's hard to put into words how far he has come.

"We had water -- about a foot and a half -- all over the basement," he said. "I lost a furnace, a hot water heater, washer/dryer (and) freezer,"

Schulze is one of likely thousands of residents touched by the floods. It has taken this long for many people to find the help they so desperately need, WISC-TV reported.

Officials said that the federal funds are available to help those who saw damage. Steve Zekoff, director of 2008 flood recovery program, said that they're doing what they can to help.

"People are still discovering that we're even out there. That we've got money available," he said.

Zekoff said that the new funds released by the federal government were meant to help those still struggling.

"There was a recognition that there was a number of folks in the 30-county area in southern Wisconsin with unmet needs, who still need some assistance," he said. "We're helping out with furniture replacement, with appliance replacement. Several places, we're having to do mold abatement issues"

For residents like Schulze, the assistance has been invaluable.

"It was a saving grace actually," he said.

Schulze said that he stumbled upon the program by chance and the $17,000 he's received has helped keep him afloat. He said that with new drain tile, new pumps, mold abatement and new appliances, he finally doesn't have to worry anymore.

"This has been absolutely wonderful. I'm looking forward to the spring for a change!" he said.

Officials said that there's roughly $2 million left to divvy out. Officials noted that this money is only for those affected by the June 2008 floods.

They said that there are some income guidelines in order to qualify for assistance. People need to be up to 150 percent of their county's median income.

They said that those who would like to apply should call 211. The deadline for the funding is Sept. 30.
