Student Who Drowned In La Crosse Was Intoxicated

Student's Father Says He Doesn't Suspect Foul Play

The La Crosse County medical examiner said the college student who drowned in the Mississippi River at La Crosse this week was highly intoxicated.

Medical Examiner John Steers said a urine test found Craig Meyers' blood alcohol concentration was 0.28, more than three times the legal limit of intoxication to drive. Final toxicology tests are pending.

Steers said the 21-year-old Western Tech student died of cold water drowning with his high level of intoxication and hypothermia as contributing factors.

His father, Ken Meyers, told the La Crosse Tribune he doesn't believe there was any foul play involved in his son's death.

Nine intoxicated college-age men have drowned in area rivers since 1997. The FBI found no evidence of foul play in the previous deaths.

The La Crosse Police Department issued a news release Friday.

"The previous river drownings have all been thoroughly investigated and reinvestigated by the Wisconsin Division of Criminal investigation and La Crosse Police Department with a review by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. There is no serial killer," said Police Chief Edward Kondracki in a statement.
