Neighborhood Leader Says New Edgewater Plans Move In Right Direction

Developer Modifies Plans For Hotel Expansion

Updated: 9:37 pm CST February 18, 2010

Some Mansion Hill residents said new plans from the developer for the proposed expansion of the Edgewater Hotel are a step in the right direction but that more could be done.

A revised plan by developer Bob Dunn, of the Hammes Company, was presented to the city's Urban Design Commission on Wednesday night, and one neighborhood leader said it's a step in the right direction.

Mansion Hill neighborhood resident Fred Mohs said he liked the added parking and the move of the eight-story hotel tower farther from Wisconsin Avenue, about 15 feet to the east.

But Mohs said he still wants more setback from the street, the removal of two floors of condos and a reduction in the hotel tower's height.

"Certainly moving the tower 15 feet off the Wisconsin Avenue right of way is a step in the right direction. There was no change in height, which is still a problem. It's a very big building," Mohs said.

Mohs said the developer has come a long way from an initial plan that he called "egregious."

"It's bigger than all the visually related buildings in the neighborhood put together, so it's still a very big building in a historic district," Mohs said.

The project was supposed to go before the Madison Common Council next week but it has been pushed back to next month.
