Family Warns Of Dangers Of Prescription Drug Abuse

Rock County 13-Year-Old Found Dead Tuesday

Updated: 1:28 pm CST February 12, 2010

A funeral is set for Monday for Alex Aiken, a 13-year-old boy who fatally overdosed on prescription pills earlier this week.

Friends and family are speaking out to spread awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse and peer pressure.

Jenny Bethel said her son Alex Aiken didn't respond when she tried to wake him for school Tuesday morning.

"No family should have to go through what my family's going through, and his friends, and everybody that Alex touched. You met him for five minutes and he touched you for the rest of your life," said Bethel.

While she mourns, she's working with the Edgerton School District where her son was a seventh-grade student.

"I want to go talk to schools. Edgerton first, but I want to talk to all the schools," said Bethel.

She said she hopes her experience can change someone else's life and keep another family from losing a child.

"OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin, all that stuff. What does it do to children? I can tell you what OxyContin does -- it killed my son," said Bethel.

It's a message shared by Alex's friend, Daniel Bastida, and his brother, Jose.

"At first, I didn't really know until after the fact," said Daniel Bastida, of why Alex allegedly took the pill or pills.

He and his brother said they believe Alex was talked into it.

"Peer pressure. I don't think he would have done it without being talked into it," said Daniel Bastida.

"I just hope people stay smart and not do all this dumb stuff. Start listening to what they feel's right and not what other people are trying to make them do," said Jose Bastida.

Bethel said her memories of her son are helping her go on to warn others.

"The reason I can face the day is because Alex would want me to be strong, and he made me strong," said Bethel.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office is still investigating this incident. Investigators are looking for how the teens got a hold of the pills.

Despite rumors, they said no arrests have been made as of 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Edgerton School District is working with the Milton School District to develop a drug education plan.

Milton schools created an intensive drug education program last year after three middle school students overdosed on heroin and survived.
