MADISON, Wis. -- An earthquake hit northern Illinois early Wednesday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey's originally measure it as a 4.3 magnitude quake, but later changed it to a 3.8 magnitude quake. It struck around 4 a.m. near DeKalb, Ill., according to the U.S. Geological Survey's Web site.Scientists said the epicenter was in Kane County, which is just west of Chicagoland.Sheriff's dispatchers in Kane County said they were overwhelmed with calls. Dispatchers also reported that the earthquake set off several residential and business alarms. Many Madison residents reported feeling a rumble and hearing dishes shaking. There are no damage reports in the Madison area, according to the police department.Residents in Michigan, Iowa and Indiana also felt the tremor, but no damage or injuries have been reported."It was about a little before 4 o'clock. I was lying in bed. I get up usually around that time. I thought I had a large snowplow coming down the highway. I live by Highway 92 in Belleville. I didn't think much of it, until I turned on the news and realized it wasn't a snowplow, it was probably the earthquake that people were talking about," said Bill Schott, who felt the earthquake in Belleville, Wis.For geologists, the small quake is all part of pattern that spans several years."In northern Illinois, I'd say once a decade there's an earthquake that makes the news. And for whatever reason, central Illinois, nothing; Wisconsin, virtually nothing. So there are areas more prone to small earthquakes on the time frames of decades," said Cliff Thurber, a geologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Residents in the area experienced a similar event in April 2008 when an eartquake struck the city of West Salem in southeastern Illinois. To put things in perspective, UW-Madison said the earthquake in Haiti broke a fault about 10 miles long and the ground moved about a yard. In the Illinois earthquake, the ground moved just a few inches.
