Super Bowl Ads Causing Controversy

Hyundai Biggest Advertising Spender In Super Bowl This Year

The countdown to the Super Bowl is on and so is the controversy that comes with pricy ads pushing the envelope.

Some ads are sparking debate about what is out of bounds for the broadcast.

From the scary but hilarious, to an emotional "thank you," many people tune in to commercials during the Super Bowl.

Like other years, there are those ads labeled too racy for TV.

This year there's a gay dating ad from Mancrunch.com, which depicts a Packers fan and a Vikings fan kissing. (Watch the ad here.)

"I guess I can understand why they would want to ban that," said Bryan Bortz, of Madison, after seeing the commercial.

"It's funny. It's got the Super Bowl sort of shock value comedy thing," laughed Andy Wallman, president of communications agency Knupp & Watson.

Wallman said many companies make edgy ads like the banned GoDaddy.com ad knowing it will get rejected. But, in turn, it will get online buzz, which will bring in new customers while saving millions on advertising. (Watch GoDaddy.com ad here.)

"It's the typical Go Daddy commercial. I can't even believe it's not being aired either," said Bess Selje, of Madison, after seeing the GoDaddy.com commercial.

One commercial that will be aired despite controversy is an anti-abortion ad featuring former college football star Tim Tebow.

"What's different to the sports fan is they really haven't been exposed to that type of ad before," said Wallman. “Are they going to say, 'I want entertainment; I want beer; I want monkeys; I want people falling down and slapstick. I don't want serious stuff.'"

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization, GLAAD, is speaking out against CBS’s decision to deny running the ManCrunch ad. CBS said its decision came because the ad is not within the network’s broadcasting standards for Super Bowl ads.

Brett Favre will be making an appearance at the Super Bowl, sort of. He's being featured in a commercial for Hyundai, which is the biggest advertising spender in the Super Bowl this year instead of Anheuser-Busch.

Wallman also said that General Motors is not advertising during the game this year.
