A not-for-profit group has bought nearly 900 acres of land in central Wisconsin to expand the habitat for grassland birds.

The Conservation Fund bought the land for $2.2 million on behalf of the state Department of Natural Resources. Some money was provided by a number of county funds.

Fund director Peg Kohring told the Stevens Point Journal that the purchase of the 883 acres will help preserve habitat for prairie chickens and other birds. The Conservation Fund plans to sell the land to the DNR this summer.

The land is part of the Buena Vista Wildlife Area south of Plover.

Thousands of people flock to Portage County each April for the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken Festival. There they can observe the birds' odd but delightful mating dance.
