Deputies Shoot Runaway Steer In Village Of Black Earth

Steer Ran Into Residential Area

Updated: 3:39 pm CST December 10, 2009

The Dane County Sheriff's Department said that deputies shot a runaway steer in the village of Black Earth Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said that deputies were called to an animal disturbance at 1345 Mills Street in the village of Black Earth at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

Schaffer said a Black Angus steer being delivered to Black Earth Meats had escaped between the trailer and the building. The steer crossed Mills Street and then ran into a residential area, taking out a fence in the process, authorities said.

Schaffer said deputies had to shoot the animal, which was then transported by a skid loader back to Black Earth Meats to be processed.

Black Earth Elementary School was on lockdown for a short time during the disturbance.
