Updated: 4:02 pm CST December 1, 2009

Channel 3000 made a Google list, along with a mix of education, movie theater and other local Web sites, as one of the most popular Google searches in the Madison area this year.

For the first time, Google has broken down the top search terms by city in its Zeitgeist 2009 survey. Google counted searches from 31 US cities to compile its lists of popular searches unique to specific cities.

Google determined that a search is "unique" if it is disproportionately popular in a particular city compared to a term for which people across the country are searching.

Google said the top search for Madison is "eCOW2," which leads to a Web-based course management system for the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering.

The No. 2 Madison search term is "Madison Mini Marathon," which leads to the official Web site of the Madison Mini-Marathon & 5K (MMM). The second annual event is set for Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010.

The third most popular Madison search is "Channel 3000 news.com," for the news, weather and information Web site Channel 3000, which keeps readers posted on what's happening throughout southern Wisconsin and all of the Badger State.

The No. 4 search is "Sundance Madison," for movie information at the Sundance Cinemas in Madison.

At No. 5 is "MMSD," for the Madison Metropolitan School District." The address for the school district's Web site is http://www.madison.k12.wi.us/.

Rounding out the top 10 is "Madison Metro schedule," for bus route and schedule information; "Market Square Theater," for movie listing information for the budget theater; "GHC Madison," for Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW), a nonprofit health care system based in Madison; "Star Cinema Fitchburg," for movie listings; and "UW Job Center," which leads to the UW Student Job Center employment Web site.
