Beloit Police Investigate 3 Shootings Over 3 Days

Authorities Say Shootings Aren't Connected

Updated: 1:12 pm CST November 28, 2009

Beloit police are investigating three unrelated shootings that occurred over three days, including a homicide.

Police on Friday were still searching for a suspect in Tuesday's homicide near Merrill Elementary School. The victim, 22-year-old Derick Kimber of Beloit, was shot while driving a rented car. His passenger was also shot and wounded.

The suspect identified in that incident, Antonio Lavell Mance, is still on the loose. Mance, who also goes by the name Larry Steele, has ties to Wausau and Chicago, authorities said.

Another 32-year-old man was hospitalized after a shooting on Wednesday on the 300 block of Euclid Avenue. Police said that was apparently drug-related.

Thursday's shooting was apparently gang-related. One 24-year-old man was hospitalized after a house on the 1500 block of Moore Street was shot at several times from a passing vehicle.

Police Capt. William Tyler said three shootings in three days isn't normal for Beloit. They said that they don't believe the shootings are connected.

"Those are highly visible and disturbing incidents. They concern us as much as anyone else and for those who live and work here, this is not reflective of this community," Tyler said.

Beloit police are stressing they need help from victims and witnesses to solve crimes.

They said that anyone with information on any of these shootings should call Crime Stoppers at 608-362-7463.
