Huge Recall Of Toyota Models Under Way

Toyota To Alter Gas Pedals Starting In January

Updated: 9:33 pm CST November 25,2009

A huge recall of a number of models of Toyota vehicles is under way across the country.

A number of the Toyota vehicles have had problems with accelerator pedals and floor mats, so now the automaker has developed a fix.

It hasn't happened in Wisconsin, but the four or five cases nationwide where gas pedals have become stuck have Toyota asking car and truck owners to bring their vehicles in.

An oil change is a routine fix Waunakee resident Tom Hankins makes to his 2008 Camry, but he just discovered that his car needs a not-so-routine repair.

"I know they had a recall regarding the floor mats and that was affecting certain floor mats affecting the accelerator," said Hankins.

His Camry, as well as a number of other Toyota models, have had problems with the gas pedal getting stuck to the floor with non-standard floor mats. It's what killed a California man and his family after his accelerator got stuck and he entered an intersection.

So dealerships like Smart Motors are preparing for a major fix.

"The recommended change is going to be to actually alter the accelerator pedal to make it smaller," said Allen Foster, general manager of Smart Motors.

Toyota will alter gas pedals starting in January, and by April it will install new ones and an engine immobilizer.

"They're going to put something in the vehicle that detects when both the accelerator and brake are being pressed simultaneously and would reduce the engine and the brake would override the accelerator," said Foster.

It all makes Hankins feel a little safer.

"I think for safety reasons, a little bit of hassle to get things fixed is worth the hassle," said Hankins.

The Toyota models affected by the recall are:

  • 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Prius
  • 2005-2010 Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 Tundra

Those who have a vehicle affected by the recall should get a letter in the mail by the end of the year, and they could come into their local dealership to get the first fix in January. New pedals are expected to be ready by April.
