A fire destroyed a duplex in the village of Cambridge Saturday afternoon.

The Dane County Sheriff's Department said the fire at 301 and 303 Pleasant Street was reported at about 1:11 p.m. Saturday.

When fire crews arrived at the scene, the structure was fully engulfed in flames.

The Sheriff's Department said both residences are considered a total loss and that the damage is estimated at more than $250,000.

Authorities said the fire was caused by cooking oil, which caught fire in the 301 Pleasant Street residence. The resident's son who was cooking at the time attempted to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials said occupants of both residences were able to safely evacuate, and no injuries were reported.

The occupants of both residences have found temporary housing with area families and friends.
