Deputies Warn Of Spike In Deer Vs. Car Crashes

Deer In Breeding Season

Updated: 9:27 am CST November 14, 2009

Police are urging motorists to watch out for deer on Wisconsin roadways.

Authorities said the next two weeks might see more deer versus vehicle crashes than any other time of the year.

The Green County Sheriff's Department reported a dozen deer versus car crashes in the last few days. Rock County reported at least 34 in the past week, and Dane County reported 49 such crashes in the last four days.

Rod Hesgard said that, during the past few days, his auto body shop has doubled the average number of estimates written.

Officials said the worst thing drivers can do is to try to swerve to avoid hitting the deer. Police said a far worse outcome can result when drivers leave their lane.

"Head on crashes usually happen," said Sgt. Ken Marquat, with the Rock County Sheriff's Department. "People behind you don't know that you're about to hit a deer, or you swerve off into the ditch and hit a permanent object, which is going to cause damage or probably injuries."

Officials said it is breeding season for deer, which means they are more active, especially around dawn and dusk.

Since that's typically when people are heading to or from work, authorities said they want drivers to be cautious and watchful for deer on the roadways.
