Wounded Wisconsin Soldier Talks About Fort Hood Shooting

Random Lake Woman Being Called A Hero

Updated: 7:44 am CST November 10,2009

Amber Bahr still has a slight limp in her step after she was shot in the back during last week's shooting rampage at Fort Hood.

But even with the constant reminder, the 19-year-old soldier from Random Lake said she still hasn't come to terms with what really happened to her. The shooting at the U.S. Army base in Texas killed 13 and injured 29 others.

“I don't think it's really hit me yet that I actually got shot," said Bahr. "I mean. I can see the wound and stuff, but I don't think mentally it's hit me yet."

The Army nutritionist was in the middle of the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, preparing for her January deployment, when terror erupted.

"All of a sudden, I heard somebody yelling something, and then I heard rounds going off, and we all hit the ground and covered our heads," said Bahr. "I think the majority of us thought it was a drill. I personally thought it was a drill. The rounds stopped and I smelled sulfur and I heard screaming and I saw blood. And I realized it wasn't a drill."

Bahr said she scrambled to help those around her, unaware she was shot. Fort Hood Commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone has praised her actions of tying a tourniquet around another soldier as heroic.

"I don't really see myself as a hero," she said. "I was just helping my battles and doing my job."

Bahr is spending some time with her family. She has 14 days of convalescent leave, but then it's back to work. She said she plans to take it easy until she deploys to Afghanistan in January.
