Doyle Declines Drunken Driving Pledge

High School Students Send Pledge To Lawmakers

Updated: 1:54 pm CST November 5, 2009

Gov. Jim Doyle said he doesn't drink and drive, but he's declining to sign a pledge sent by a group of students to resign if he's caught doing so.

Last week, a group of students from D.C. Everest High School in Schofield e-mailed Wisconsin lawmakers, asking them to sign an agreement that they'll resign if caught driving drunk.

So far, a Manitowoc Democrat is the only lawmaker to sign it.

The group expected Doyle to sign, but instead his office released a statement saying that everyone knows Doyle doesn't drink and drive, but he thinks democracy works best when elected officials are held accountable by voters.

A Doyle spokesman told WSAW-TV on Wednesday that Doyle applauds the students' efforts but stands by his decision not to sign the pledge.
