Dane County Jail Inmate Attempts Suicide

Deputy Catches Incident On Camera System

Posted: 9:52 pm CDT October 31, 2009

Dane County authorities said that an inmate attempted suicide at the Dane County Jail on Saturday night.

A deputy said he witnessed the inmate wrap a towel around his neck and try to strangle himself on the jail's camera monitoring system at about 7 p.m. The deputy and his partners stopped the attempt and took the inmate to a local hospital.

The inmate was evaluated and transported back to the jail, where he was placed under suicide watch.

In 2008, the Dane County Jail added 71 cameras to the Dane County Jail-City-County Building along with updating the video monitoring system. Authorities said this system was instrumental in preventing this suicide attempt.
