Madison Makes Nuisance Ordinance Permanent

Council Repeals Sunset Clause

Posted: 10:36 pm CDT October 20, 2009

The Madison Common Council made the city's chronic nuisance ordinance permanent Tuesday by repealing a sunset clause.

The ordinance had a sunset provision for Nov. 1, meaning it was set to end this year.

Since the ordinance started in 2007, the city has sent 100 "warning" letters to property managers and landlords.

Police said eight of those warnings have been acted on.

The ordinance was started to resolve conflicts with troublesome tenants and landlords.
