Taxpayers Paying For Murderer's Facial Surgery

Man Was Disfigured When He Shot Himself

Updated: 8:15 am CDT October 14,2009

Wisconsin taxpayers are footing the bill for a convicted murderer to have major facial surgery.

Daryl Strenke fatally shot his girlfriend Samantha Verby in 2002, and then turned the gun on himself. Strenke survived, but was left disfigured. He's now serving a 30-year sentence for Verby's death.

Strenke is about to undergo expensive surgeries to reconstruct his face and the state Department of Corrections plans to pay for the procedure -- something that angers his victim's family.

"When the perpetrator does it to himself with the idea that he went there on a death wish," said Samantha's father, Larry Verby. "And being that he murdered my daughter, I have no sympathy for him."

The Department of Corrections isn't giving an estimate on the cost of Strenke's surgeries.
